Educational purpose only

The material on this site is provided for historical, educational and recreational purposes. Classical ciphers are described in order to explain how they worked and why they failed. Descriptions are not instructions for circumventing the security of any system in use today, and modern cryptographic systems are named only for comparison.

Nothing on this site is legal, professional or security advice. Do not rely on a classical cipher to protect anything that matters.

Use of the content

Text, illustrations and tool code on this site are the property of Cipherloom unless otherwise stated. You may read, print and quote the material for personal, educational and non-commercial purposes, with attribution and a link to the source page.

You may not republish substantial portions of the site as your own work, resell the content, or use the material to train a commercial model without written permission. Short quotations with attribution are always welcome.

The bench tools

The tools are provided as they are, without warranty of any kind. They implement historical ciphers and are not suitable for protecting real information — by design, most of the ciphers here are trivially breakable.

You are responsible for how you use the output. Do not use these tools to conceal unlawful activity.

Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, Cipherloom is not liable for any loss arising from the use of this site or reliance on its content, including any inaccuracy in the descriptions of the ciphers.
